The Col. William Prescott Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Newark recently recognized the winners of its Good Citizens program and scholarship contest.

The DAR Good Citizens program recognizes youth who exhibit the qualities of good citizenship in their homes, school and communities. Selected students demonstrate dependability, service, leadership and patriotism.

Clyde-Savannah High School Courtney Bowen was among those who were honored at its annual ceremony.

Eleven school districts in Wayne County participated in the program. Boys started being accepted as candidates in 1975. Daniel Davis, of Williamson, won at the national level in 1980.

The National Society DAR was founded in 1890 to promote historic preservation, education and patriotism. Members are descended from the patriots who won American independence during the Revolutionary War. Visit dar.org for information.
